The Jam Lady

Christine Gledhill, aka The Jam Lady, is the soubriquet by which she has been known for a good slice of her life – and slices of good bread with some traditional jam, what more could you ask for.... unless of course you have a scone and some cream. Until 40 years ago she had never thought that ‘jam making’ could be considered a craft, but when one of her daughters encouraged her to venture out to share her ‘goodies’ with the discerning public, and when they buy, she makes some more! What drives her passion for Artisan Preserves? Is it the retention of an old fashioned skill that so many folk think of as verging on alchemy, or is it a long held belief that there is no need for chemicals or additives to make good produce? Whatever you are looking for you will find it on Christine’s stall, from spectacular marmalades to complete your morning breakfast, or a spiked up (or traditional) chutney to liven up lunch, or an exotic jam for afternoon tea – she has something that will tempt you and if you want to give preserves a go yourself she has two books, giving her recipes, that she will sell you. Christine has found that if she needs to lift her spirits all she need do is to delve into the freezer for some fruit, get down a big ‘jelly pan’ and by the time she has decided what she is going to make, found the booze or spices, and the ubiquitous sugar, the blues have vanished. The ‘Jam Lady’, has been a member of Craft in Action since its inception and has, in the past, spent time as a committee remember and can be seen perched on her stall at many of their fairs.
